The ambassador started his speech with a thank you to everyone at the venue. He explained the vision of the association which was launched in 1967 under the name of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Five countries were part of this establishment initially, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. All five regions signed the declaration that has now grown to include five more countries as an expansion.
The latter added countries are Brunei, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. It is expected to be eleven soon.
From day one, the complexity of the geopolitical landscape has not been able to jolt ASEAN from its mission of protecting human rights. ASEAN has done so with unfluctuating respect and support for international laws and playing a central role in connecting with its partners via high degrees of cooperation.
Maintaining a culture of peace has always been the highlighted DNA of ASEAN as the association has worked to build and maintain peace, stability and prosperity in every region that is its part.
A long journey till the 57th ASEAN Day
The ambassador said, “For nearly six decades now, ASEAN has come a long way. The aspiration of the people of ASEAN of our region to emerge as a dynamic, inclusive, rules-based, people-oriented, and people-centred one community has begun to take shape”.
He further added that connectivity and resilience remain the core strengths of the way forward that ASEAN has adopted in recent years. The primary reason is facing global challenges by keeping a steady momentum of growth.
For connectivity, he asserted, “Our vigorous economic growth is powered by our constant zeal to improve cooperation and connectivity in physical and digital infrastructure”. He was happy that with the cooperation of all the member countries, they were able to make advancements with giant leaps in transportation, infrastructure, digital transformation and ICT.
The ambassador was proud to say that Malaysia is the only ASEAN country that gives physical representation in Dublin. He expected that by the time Malaysia gains the ASEAN Chairmanship in January 2025, there would be other countries joining soon to make both themes shine brighter than before.
The ambassador concluded his remarks with confidence that connectivity and resilience would be adopted with greater commitment together. He asserted that it is this commitment that has made ASEAN countries more vibrant than before, ready to take on any challenges that the global dynamics throw at them.
Finally, he expressed his appreciation to Ireland for its ongoing support of ASEAN. He did not stop to say thanks to all of the people present at one of the most memorable days in ASEAN’s history, which is celebrated on the 8th of August every year.
The event served some of the finest cuisines of Malaysia to represent its culture. The special selection of the menu was done for marking the celebration of diplomacy initiatives in 2025 during Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship.
