NEARLY 60% of Irish people admit they have never attended a live women’s sporting event, according to a new study commissioned by Ladies Football National League sponsors Lidl. The research, conducted by Red C in December, reveals a significant gender disparity, as Irish people are five times more likely to attend premier men’s events compared to their female counterparts.

The findings, described as ‘stark,’ also highlight that almost half (46%) believe men’s sports are generally more enjoyable to watch, with 59% expressing a preference for watching men’s sports on TV over attending live female sporting events.

Lidl and LGFA launch campaign to boost women’s participation in women’s sports event

In response to these findings, Lidl and LGFA have joined forces to launch a campaign titled ‘Get Behind the Fight.’ The campaign aims to challenge existing perceptions and biases towards female sports in Ireland. Lidl CEO J.P. Scally emphasised the importance of supporting female athletes regularly, stating, “It’s about creating a new wave of support for the next generation to drive on the game.

“The research indicates that barriers to attending female sports events include a lack of media coverage (40%), difficult venue access (37%), not knowing anyone playing (34%), and high ticket prices (34%). Perceptions and unconscious biases around women’s sports event in Ireland continue to be key obstacles.

The campaign comes ahead of the 2024 Lidl NFL kick-off, featuring players like Emma Duggan (Meath), Kerry captain Síofra O’Shea, and Dublin’s Carla Rowe. Of note, 57% of attendees at live female sporting events are male, emphasising the need for broader support.

To address the issue, a Ladies Football conference will be held on Wednesday, featuring speakers like Lindsay Peterson from the University of Nebraska and Holly Murdock from the English FA. Both organisations have achieved record attendances at female sports events, demonstrating the potential for growth in women’s sports.

Dublin All-Ireland winner and Lidl ambassador Carla Rowe emphasised the impact of fan support, stating, “As a player, having fans in the stands makes a world of difference.” The campaign hopes to encourage more people to attend female sports events regularly, creating a positive atmosphere that elevates women in sports at all levels.
