Kaylee Hottle’s tragic death | Tributes pour in for actress

Kaylee Hottle, U.S. actress and star of Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), has passed away following a car accident in Maryland.

The talented 18 year-old was the international star who played the younger Jia in the MonsterVerse series. The family and local authorities confirmed her death after which the Hollywood community is in tears.

Fatal single-vehicle crash in Maryland

The deadly single-vehicle crash took place early Tuesday morning in Frederick County, Md. Responders were dispatched to Ijamsville at approximately 2:52 a.m. when a 1995 Honda Accord came to rest on the road after hitting a drainage culvert.

Hottle was rushed to a local trauma centre where she was declared dead. The driver, who was 19 years old, was injured, but not seriously, officials said, and was suspected to have been travelling at an excessive speed.

Her father, Joshua Hottle, officially announced the news on a Facebook ASL livestream that was made public. 

Breakthrough Hollywood role as Jia

As the orphan girl, Jia, who befriended King Kong, Hottle gained international recognition and was known for her breakout role. She made her feature film debut in 2021 in Godzilla vs. Kong and returned to the role in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire in 2024.

Her acting left a lasting impression on her co-stars, including Rebecca Hall, Alexander Skarsgård and Millie Bobby Brown, who all had the chance to learn American Sign Language (ASL) for their roles.

She was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor for her performance and also got critical acclaim. 

Legacy of deaf representation in cinema

In addition to her silver screen achievements, Hottle was a strong proponent of real Deaf inclusion in mainstream film. She was born into a family of Deaf people and was a native user of American Sign Language (ASL) native user.

Before her big break, she appeared in commercials to promote awareness about Deaf accessibility.

Hottle was an Austin native and was a senior at the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) at the time of her death. The school said it was a “tremendous loss” to the community.

Outpouring of the tributes from co-stars and studios

Family, co-stars, and studio associates were emotional in their tributes to Hottle’s life at the news of her death. Her father uploaded a heartbreaking post online as he made his way to Maryland, and sent the driver a message of forgiveness.

Co-star Millie Bobby Brown posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, stating that she was “so devastated” and Kaylee would be “deeply missed”.

Her pioneering efforts and everlasting impact on the film industry were also recognized in official tributes from the film industry giant Legendary Pictures and community figures.
