In a decisive move, members of the Irish Air Line Pilots’ Association (IALPA) have overwhelmingly voted to accept Labour Court proposals, effectively ending a long-standing pay dispute with Aer Lingus. With an impressive 85% approval on a 96% turnout, the electronic ballot concluded this morning.

The approved deal includes a significant 17.75% pay increase for pilots spread over four years. IALPA had strongly recommended acceptance of the Labour Court’s proposals, holding a series of informational meetings last week to ensure members were well-informed before voting.

IALPA President, Captain Mark Tighe, hailed the agreement as the most substantial pay award in 30 years for Aer Lingus pilots. He emphasised that the negotiations did not result in any changes to work practices, which management had sought to fund the pay raise. Tighe asserted that companies enjoying significant profits must ensure employee remuneration reflects their success and protects against inflation.

Despite welcoming the deal, Tighe criticised Aer Lingus for not reaching an agreement during the 22 months preceding the Labour Court’s intervention, suggesting that the industrial action, which led to the cancellation of 610 flights and impacted around 84,000 passengers, was avoidable.

The Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) also expressed relief, calling the agreement a positive development for travellers and the tourism sector.
