The body of a 39-year-old Irish man, who had been reported missing while hiking on the Italian island of Sardinia, has been discovered, as confirmed by local media.

The alarm was raised when the Irish man failed to return from his hike, prompting a swift and extensive search operation.

Italian national broadcaster RAI and other local media sources reported that the man’s body was found by a search dog near the side of Canale de Sa Rocca Niedda. The challenging terrain and the complexities of the search area added to the difficulties faced by the rescue teams.

The Irish man was reportedly hiking with his brothers when they decided to split up. While his siblings took a different route, the Irish man continued on his own. When he did not return as expected, a member of his family alerted the authorities, triggering a full-scale search effort. The search, which spanned both Friday and Saturday night, involved a range of resources.

Alpine Rescue personnel were at the forefront of the search for the missing Irish man, supported by specialised dog teams trained to locate individuals in difficult conditions. Additionally, a search and rescue helicopter was deployed to cover a wider area from above.

Piloted drones equipped with thermal imaging technology were also used to detect any signs of the missing hiker. Despite these extensive efforts, the recovery operation was complicated by the area’s inaccessibility.
