Calls for Stricter Sentences After Cathal Crotty’s Suspended Sentence
Ms. O’Brien shared her frustration, noting that many victims do not get the chance to appeal such lenient sentences. She believes that public outcry influenced the decision to appeal. “I have no doubt there would not have been an appeal had there not been a national uproar,” she said.
The Labour Party plans to introduce a motion next Wednesday calling for stricter sentencing guidelines in assault cases. Ms. O’Brien, who has faced backlash for her outspoken stance, remains determined to advocate for change. “Their hate is my motivation to keep going,” she stated.
The appeal is expected to be heard in October or November, offering a glimmer of hope for justice reform.
