OVO, meaning “egg” in Portuguese, explores the beauty of biodiversity through a captivating narrative that showcases the unique personalities and abilities of various insect species. From mighty crickets bouncing on trampolines to hypnotic spiders contorting within their webs, the show is a non-stop riot of energy and movement designed to tickle the imaginations of audiences both young and old.
The massive stage production features a diverse cast of 100 individuals from 25 different countries, including 52 incredibly talented artists. Since its debut in Montreal in 2009, OVO has enraptured over 7 million people in 35 countries, solidifying its status as a global sensation.
What to expect from Cirque du Soleil OVO 2024?
Tickets for OVO are now available online exclusively to Club Cirque members, offering enthusiasts the opportunity to secure their seats for this extraordinary experience. The anticipation builds even before the curtain rises, with an array of beautifully coloured, costume-fitted butterflies, beetles, caterpillars, spiders, and dragonflies appearing alongside the unmistakable chirping of crickets that reverberates through the auditorium.
Jane Mallet, Senior Publicist on the tour, shared insights into the meticulous recreation process undergone during the unexpected pause brought about by the pandemic. “We took the unexpected pause during the pandemic to revisit OVO and did a three-month recreation process at Cirque Du Soleil’s headquarters in Montreal,” she revealed. “There are 3 new characters, acts, artists, and lots of other things for you and everybody in the family to discover in the show.”
OVO’s Director, Deborah Colker, drew inspiration from the intricate world of insects, emphasizing the promotion of movement that resonates throughout. The live melodies and songs, performed by seven musicians, add a magical and enchanting dimension to the production, with a score by composer Berna Cappas inspired by the music of Brazil.
One of the unique aspects of OVO is its engaging interaction with the audience right from the beginning, as insects mingle and captivate spectators. Designed for audiences of all ages, the show provides a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle, inviting everyone to embrace the captivating life beneath their feet.
For those sitting close to the stage, a word of caution—prepare for potential involvement in this smashing tale. As OVO celebrates 14 years on the road (with a brief pause during the pandemic), it takes 12 hours to set up the entire production and 4.5 hours to dismantle before moving on to its next destination.
Former street performers Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix formed Cirque du Soleil, a massive Canadian entertainment company that is the largest producer of contemporary circus worldwide, in Baie-Saint-Paul in 1984. With its return to Ireland, OVO promises to weave a lasting tapestry of memories for all who witness its mesmerizing spectacle.
