In Caracas, Venezuela, a tense standoff unfolded between security forces and protesters following President Nicolás Maduro’s claim of victory in controversial election results in the recent presidential elections. On Monday, thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets, denouncing Maduro’s assertion of securing a third six-year term. The National Electoral Council, loyal to Maduro’s government, declared him the winner with just over 51% of the vote.

Riot Police Clash with Protesters as Opposition Disputes Controversial Election Results

There are reports of riot police deploying tear gas against protesters, who responded by banging pots and pans and burning tires. Opposition supporters, including Edmundo González Urrutia and barred candidate María Corina Machado, contested the official results, claiming they received over 70% of the vote. Machado urged Maduro to accept his defeat, calling for his resignation.
