Dublin City Council has brought a glimmer of joy to the start of the year by announcing the extension of the ‘Dublin Winter Lights’ in selected locations until the end of January. The decision to keep these enchanting lights on is aimed at brightening up what is traditionally one of the gloomiest months of the year.

For a few more weeks, the famous lights that adorn O’Connell St. (GPO, Spire, sculptures, trees), the Samuel Beckett Bridge, and the Millennium Bridge will continue to brighten the metropolis and provide a visual feast for both locals and tourists.

What’s caused the extension of Dublin Winter Lights?

Daithí de Róiste, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, explained the rationale behind the Council’s choice, stating that January is typically a bit of a gloomy month following the euphoria of Christmas. To help everyone feel better, we’ve decided to keep certain lights on for a few additional weeks this year! At this time of year, let’s face it, we could all use a little pick-me up.

Dublin Winter Lights

Even after the majority of the “Dublin City Council Dublin Winter Lights” were turned off as scheduled at the end of December, these select locations will continue to sparkle. The decision reflects the Council’s commitment to bringing a sense of warmth and festivity to the community during the often chilly and dark days of January.

The ‘Dublin City Council Dublin Winter Lights’ have once again proven to be a massive hit, drawing admiration from Dubliners and visitors alike throughout December. Merrion Square Park alone welcomed over 45 thousand visitors who flocked to witness the magical display of lights.

As the lights continue to shine bright, Dublin City Council hopes to cast away the January blues and spread a little extra cheer among the citizens of Dublin. So, if you find yourself strolling through the city center, don’t forget to bask in the glow of these extended winter lights—a visual spectacle to lift spirits in the heart of winter.
