Kamala Harris Accepts Democratic Presidential Nomination in Chicago, Vows ‘New Way Forward’

In Chicago, Kamala Harris formally accepted the Democratic Presidential Nomination. Before a rapturous crowd, she pledged a “new way forward” if she defeats Republican Donald Trump in November’s election. In an attempt to set a presidential tone amidst one of the most remarkable political turnarounds in US history, Harris,59, spoke of opportunity and unity.

She sharply criticised Trump, accusing him of trying to “take our country” backwards and of aligning with foreign “tyrants” like Russian President Vladimir Putin. In sharp contrast to Trump, Harris also called for an end to the Gaza War and the struggle against worldwide tyranny.

On stage with her husband, Doug Emhoff, and her VP pick, Tim Walz, Harris emphasised her stance in the struggle between democracy and tyranny, accusing Trump of bowing to dictators. She emerged as the Democratic candidate just a month ago after allies of President Biden urged him to step aside.

Harris laid out broad policy principles but did not delve into specifics. Her speech highlighted the significance of the upcoming election as a “precious opportunity” to move past divisive battles and chart a new path forward. Harris has the opportunity to become history’s first elected female US president if she is successful.
