Derry City Murder Inquiry Opens Following Woman’s Death
A Derry City murder investigation has been launched after a woman’s body was found in an apartment. This event took place earlier this morning in a house located at 110 Harvey Street, after a fire was reported to the emergency services at about 4.15 AM.
Firefighters went to the scene of a fire at a ground floor residence at Harvey street only to discover that the woman had died. Even though the emergency services arrived rather promptly, she was already declared dead on the scene.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has termed it as worrying especially to the family and has procured to carry out a comprehensive murder investigation to know if there is an element of arson or if there are other circumstances that led to the death of the woman.
Currently, the PSNI is involved in soliciting support from the public. Detectives have released an appeal for any witnesses of any suspicious activity in Harvey Street at any time between 2 am and 5 am.
This includes residents or motorists who could have recorded the scene in different vehicles such as dash-cam or doorbell cameras. To this end, the authorities think that captured footage might contain essential information regarding the circumstances of the fire and the woman’s death.

Sinn Féin councillor Sandra Duffy also said that the entire community mourned the tragedy that has occurred. “I understand the community is in shock today after police confirmed that a woman was found dead at a house in Harvey Street,” Duffy added. “My heartfelt condolences go to this woman’s family and those who knew her. This is very unfortunate and I’m sure all the people here will be worried, nobody wants to be involved in a tragedy like this one”.
She further warned the public not to approach the Harvey Street while the police were conducting their investigation because the Street had been closed to facilitate the search because it would be used for forensic examination.
The SDLP MLA for Foyle, Mark H Durkan also mourned the catastrophe as he called it ‘harrowing and heartbreaking.’ Durkan took further to post his condolence message via Facebook in which he condoled the grieving family of the woman while admitting the need for public support for the investigation. “Stay safe, everyone,” followed by, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family that had to wake up to the worst news this morning.” “If anyone was to have seen something, no matter how small it may have seemed, they are urged to come forward and assist the police where they can.”
Thus in connection with this investigation, Waterloo Street and Chamberlain Street have been blocked to the public and the circulation of automobiles in this locality has been disrupted.
The PSNI has extended its warning to drivers saying that they should expect some holdup and that they should avoid the affected roads. All the routes have not been re-opened yet and the police have not given the time estimate as to when the roads are going to be re-opened because the investigations are still on.
