Derry Fire: Tragic Death of Woman Launches Major Investigation
Derry, Northern Ireland – A woman was found dead in her apartment after a fire was started in Derry in the early hours of Saturday morning. Her death is being treated as suspicious by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
Firefighters Discover Body
The Derry fire was reported on Harvey Street and emergency crews responded to the scene at approximately 4.15 AM. When the firefighters got to the scene the ground floor apartment was filled with fire. After putting out the fire, they found the lifeless body of the woman within the house. Despite the intervention of the emergency teams, the woman was confirmed deceased at the scene.
Suspicious Circumstances
The PSNI has opened a full investigation into the woman’s death which is currently listed as suspicious. The cause of the fire is still unknown and much as the authorities are trying to determine whether it was a mere accident or arson.
The detectives have called on anyone with information to come forward. In the statement to the press, a PSNI spokesperson said the following: “We are interested in talking to anyone who may have been in the Harvey Street vicinity or perhaps heard something or someone during the period between 2 and 5 in the morning.” “We are also appealing for any dash-cam or doorbell camera that was recording at the time of the incident. ”

Community Reaction
Police found the body of the woman and the incidents have been a shock to the local people. Mark H Durkan an MLA for Foyle with the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) said that the incident was “harrowing and heartbreaking”.
“I hope everyone in my city will keep in mind the family who got the worst possible start to the morning,” Durkan said in a statement. “I appeal to anyone with information that may help the police in their investigation so as to have clarity and justice. ”
Road Closures and Traffic Disruptions
During the investigation, Waterloo Street and Chamberlain Street have been blocked for everyone and there have been lots of traffic jams around this area. The PSNI has urged residents and motorists to park up, turn around and go another way and to prepare for further delays.
It lost three premises in the Dolores Street store fire and the following closure of two more stores, and these closures are likely to persist in the long-term, as forensic experts investigate the cause of the fire. Government agencies have not indicated the time that the roads will be opened again.
Investigation Continues
The Police Service of Northern Ireland is still investigating the circumstances that led to the woman’s death and detectives continue to discover the circumstances that led to the fire outbreak. The community or the people in Derry continue to live in suspense, and they have to wait for more information from the authorities.
The woman has neither been identified nor her identity released to the public since her next of kin has to be informed. Sadly she died under very unclear circumstances, the PSNI has however promised to fully investigate the matter.
Over time, the PSNI will be releasing more information about the incident and the public will be waiting for the truth. For now, the whole community is grieving due to the death of the woman and the cause of the fire and her death remain critical points of discussion.
