Dr. Umar Al-Qadri, a prominent figure in Ireland’s Muslim community, has thrown his hat into the ring for the European Parliament Elections 2024 in the Dublin Constituency. Under the banner of “Empower Dublin’s Diversity in Europe,” Dr. Al-Qadri’s campaign promises to champion the voices and aspirations of Dublin’s diverse populace in the European Parliament.

After actively participating in international consultations, such as meetings with the European Parliament and other EU institutions, where he gave panel discussions and expert speeches on topics like racism, interfaith harmony, religious freedom, and human rights, Dr. Al-Qadri made the decision to enter politics. Furthermore, having recently been the target of an unintentional racist assault, Dr. Al-Qadri stresses the significance of opposing hatred and division and promoting harmony and peace.

Dr. Umar Al-Qadri brings a wealth of experience to his candidacy, drawing from his multifaceted background as a successful entrepreneur, a prominent Muslim faith leader, and a passionate advocate for social justice. As an independent candidate, he offers a fresh perspective on the issues facing Dublin and Europe, backed by his deep-rooted commitment to community service and inclusive leadership.

Dr. Umar Al-Qadri comes from a family of Pakistani Muslims who were scholars. His father was an imam in The Hague, Netherlands, in the late 1970s. Dr. Al-Qadri is an Irish-based scholar and sheikh of Sunni Islam. In addition to his role as a religious leader, he serves as the chair of the Irish Muslim Peace & Integration Council, which is a national Muslim representation organisation that has offices in Belfast, Dublin, Cork, Athlone, and Portlaoise.

Ireland’s representation in the European Parliament

Regarding Ireland’s representation in the European Parliament, its three European constituencies are presently represented by 13 MEPs. But Ireland is expected to gain one more seat following the June 7 elections, making a total of fourteen Irish MEPs. The constituencies for the elections in June are Midlands North-West (4 seats up to 5) and South (5 seats), with Dublin having 4 seats.

Voters in Ireland will have the opportunity to cast their ballots for their chosen candidates simultaneously with the local elections. Dr. Umar Al-Qadri’s candidacy adds to the diverse array of options available to voters in the Dublin Constituency.
