Dublin-Belfast Train Service to Operate with Journey Times Under Two Hours
Under the new plan, an hourly timetable will be rolled out, accompanied by the replacement of the existing fleet of four Enterprise trains with eight modern, sustainable counterparts. These new trains, initially powered by electricity and batteries, signify a leap forward in eco-friendly transportation.
The journey, spanning 180 kilometres, has a storied history, with the first Enterprise steam train making its inaugural trip from Belfast to Dublin back in 1947. Travel timings at the moment range from two hours and five minutes to two and a half hours, with stops at Drogheda, Portadown, Newry, and Dundalk.
The significant €165 million investment announced by the Peace Plus initiative highlights the cooperative efforts of the Stormont Executive, the Irish Government, the UK, and the European Union. This initiative aligns with broader sustainability goals, with a target set for a “fully electrified cross-Border rail corridor” by 2029, in line with net-zero carbon emission objectives.
European Commissioner Elisa Ferreira lauded the investment, emphasising its role in fostering community growth and connectivity. Stormont Minister John O’Dowd hailed the project as a stepping stone towards decarbonization commitments, echoing sentiments echoed by Department for Transport Minister Eamon Ryan TD.
With a procurement process underway, the ambitious endeavour promises to usher in a new era of rapid, sustainable transportation, cementing its place as a catalyst for regional regeneration and economic growth. As the wheels of progress turn, the Belfast to Dublin train journey is poised to become a symbol of cross-border cooperation and connectivity for generations to come.
