EPA Says 6.8% Emission Reduction in 2023 is a Positive Step Forward

Emission reduction

Official figures reveal a 6.8% emission reduction in Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions last year, marking a historic achievement. Laura Burke, Director General of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), celebrated the news, stating, “Right across society, we’re seeing very, very significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, now at their lowest in 30 years.”

This reduction, equivalent to one tonne of climate pollution per person, is the largest single-year decrease ever recorded, bringing emissions to their lowest level in three decades. Burke attributed this success to a combination of climate policy, decarbonisation measures, regulation, economics, and community action.

Emission Reduction Show Ireland Decoupling Growth from Emissions

Minister for Environment, Climate, and Communications Eamon Ryan highlighted that the figures indicate Ireland is decoupling economic growth from emissions, paving the way for a green economic future attractive to businesses.

Emission reduction

Despite a marginal rise in transport emissions, they remained 4.3% below pre-COVID levels. This was due to increased biofuel use, a surge in electric vehicles, and greater public transport use. A milder winter, new solid fuel laws, and high fuel prices all contributed to a 7% decrease in residential emissions. Over 30,000 heat pumps were installed, totaling 120,000 nationwide.

The energy sector saw the most significant reduction, with emissions falling by 21.6%, thanks to a massive increase in imported and renewable electricity. Agriculture also contributed, with a 4.6% reduction in emissions due to decreased fertiliser use and non-dairy livestock numbers.

Burke said that although these findings are encouraging, Ireland is still not on track to reach its climate commitments for 2030. Achieving the necessary reductions will require maintaining and accelerating current efforts. Minister Ryan emphasised the importance of continued improvement, acknowledging the progress across various sectors but stressing the need for ongoing action.
