Gatwick Airport Evacuates Terminal Amid Controlled Explosion Outside US Embassy Following Suspicious Item Alert

London was placed on high security alert on Friday as British authorities addressed two concurrent security measures, which bring to light a central issue of public security in densely populated zones.

At the same time, one of the largest airports in Europe – Gatwick Airport – had to evacuate a substantial part of the South Terminal of the airport due to a security threat related to a possible violation of transport security rules. “We can confirm that the ‘loud bang’ reported in the area a short time ago was a controlled explosion carried out by officers. Enquiries are still ongoing, and cordons will remain in place for the time being,” the Metropolitan Police stated.

Further investigations are still under way, and the areas will continue to be secured for now,” the Metropolitan Police added.

The ambassador’s compound was cordoned off, police and military surrounded the compound and went through the compound as well as the embassy. Various sources indicate that about 50 people with their visa-related appointments were kept behind barriers as the authorities processed the incident. 

Employees inside the embassy were kept inside while at least several persons, some of whom were visitors, were confined by automatic doors before they were evacuated from the building. Police officers had requested the attendance of fire fighters, and a canine unit in order to conduct the identification process.

Cirium, which provides aviation analytics, said Gatwick was planned for 316 flights in total on Friday that would accommodate more than 60,600 people. Another 318 flights arriving to the airport were also expected which will transport more than 61,400 passengers.

Due to the evacuation of the South Terminal, people were unable to access or gain entry or even have check-ins, resulting in a string of delays and cancellations. National Rail Enquiries also established that there was no train services to and from Gatwick Airport station or any means of transportation from that station thus making the implication even more severe.

“The police are dealing with an incident at Gatwick Airport. The station and airport are currently being evacuated. Services are able to run through the station and area but will not call at Gatwick Airport at this time. Please avoid travelling to the station while this incident is ongoing. This is expected to continue until approximately 2 pm,” National Rail Enquiries stated.

Speaking to the press, people at the airport complained of the delay but many understood that safety comes first in such circumstances. Airport managers were keen to ensure that such disruptions were addressed and also to keep the travellers informed.
