Padraig Doyle, a senior engineer with the council’s drainage section, expresses the Council’s concern over the environmental impact of this driveway rental boom. Homeowners, particularly those in proximity to transportation hubs, are resorting to paving over their gardens, replacing the natural absorption of rainwater with impermeable surfaces like concrete and asphalt. The consequences of this shift are far-reaching, leading to pollution of rivers and streams and an increased risk of flooding in the affected areas.
Problems associated with the driveway rentals in Dublin
Doyle emphasises the critical role of grass and soil in the natural environment, explaining that rainwater falling on grass is absorbed into the ground, with any excess gradually making its way to rivers or streams. In contrast, concrete and tarmac prevent water absorption, causing rapid runoff into the sewerage system. The problem is exacerbated by climate change, contributing to more intense rainfall and worsening the situation over time.
The older parts of the city face acute challenges, with Victorian sewers designed to handle both sewage and rainfall runoff. Even in areas with separate rainfall pipes, pollution still finds its way into watercourses due to increased rainfall volumes. Doyle highlights the capacity issues in these pipes, which can lead to surface water flooding and the transport of pollutants like dog foul and microplastics to rivers and streams.
Despite these environmental concerns, Garrett Flower, founder of Parkpnp, an online platform facilitating parking space rentals, sees the shift towards suburban parking as an environmental gain. Flower argues that the demand for parking has shifted from the city centre to the suburbs, particularly in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. He contends that his platform helps save time and reduce pollution by efficiently connecting drivers with available parking spaces.
In response to the environmental challenges posed by driveway rentals in Dublin, the Council urges residents to consider permeable alternatives such as gravel or brick paving for additional parking. Additionally, they propose a solution for those who have already opted for concrete or tarmac—replacing a strip with gravel to promote water absorption.
