This high-stakes presidential debate, set for 10 September, will be the first between Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump. It follows President Joe Biden’s decision to step aside after a lacklustre performance in June.

Strict Mic-Silencing Rule Set for High-Stakes Presidential Debate

One important regulation is that while a candidate isn’t speaking, the microphones will be silenced. However, the Harris team is hoping for moments when ABC News, the debate’s host, is forced to unmute.

Ms. Harris’ rise to the top of the Democratic ticket has reinvigorated her party’s campaign, following concerns about Biden’s chances. Recent polls indicate Ms. Harris is now edging ahead of Mr. Trump, reversing the lead he held over Biden.

Over the weekend, Harris challenged Trump to debate with microphones switched on throughout. Hot mics can expose off-hand remarks, which can both help and hurt candidates. Trump’s adviser, Jason Miller, expressed satisfaction with the debate rules, saying Americans deserve to hear the candidates clearly.
