Hot School Meals Expansion to Benefit 29,000 More Children
Starting in September, 29,000 children across 168 additional primary schools will gain access to hot school meals, marking a significant expansion of the program. Hot School Meals expansion now benefits 2,200 schools nationwide, and is a part of a broader effort by the Government to ensure all primary schools participate by Budget 2025. Currently, around 1,000 schools are yet to join the scheme.

Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys expressed optimism about completing the rollout, calling it a potential “lasting legacy” of the current administration. While the scheme has been praised for its benefits, including improved concentration and reduced financial burden on families, some concerns have been raised. Critics argue about the nutritional quality of the meals and the environmental impact of packaging waste.
Hot School Meals Expansion Receives Broad Support
Despite these criticisms, the program has received widespread support. Barnardos National Policy Manager Stephen Moffatt highlighted the positive effects on children’s learning and social development, and the financial relief it provides to families. The initiative is seen as a crucial support for many families, particularly those facing economic hardship, ensuring that children receive at least one nutritious meal each school day.
