Standing tall amongst the contenders is Lisa Mulcahy’s “Lies We Tell,” an adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu’s gothic classic “Uncle Silas,” which dominates the list with a staggering 13 nominations!

Close on its heels are Pat Collins’s acclaimed rendition of John McGahern’s “That They May Face The Rising Sun” and Ian Hunt-Duffy’s gripping horror narrative “Double Blind,” both garnering 11 mentions each. Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Poor Things,” fresh from its triumph at the Oscars, also finds itself in contention within the international categories.

IFTA CEO Áine Moriarty tweeted her excitement over the outstanding group of finalists: “What an amazing showcase of nominees shortlisted for the Irish Academy Awards this year.” When it comes to acting, filmmaking, and narrative, Irish talent is rising to the top of the global scene both in front of and behind the camera.

Premiering at the Galway Film Fleadh last July, “Lies We Tell” boasts Agnes O’Casey in the lead role, portraying a young heiress entangled in a sinister plot against her uncle in a remote setting during the late 19th century.

O’Casey’s stellar performance has propelled her into the Best Actress category, where she contends with industry stalwarts like Saoirse Ronan, Jessie Buckley, and Eve Hewson.

“That They May Face the Rising Sun,” a poignant exploration of rural life, particularly captivated audiences during its premiere at the London Film Festival.

Barry Ward’s portrayal of a writer navigating life amidst eccentric characters has earned him a nomination for Best Actor, with the film itself being touted as a frontrunner for the coveted Best Film award.

Six films stand poised for the top prize, with contenders like “Flora and Son,” “Double Blind,” and “Lies We Tell” vying for recognition alongside other noteworthy entries.

The competitive landscape also extends to the acting categories, where established names such as Cillian Murphy and Barry Keoghan face off against rising talents like Andrew Scott.

The IFTA 2024 Nominations transcend boundaries, recognizing excellence not only in indigenous productions but also in international cinema. With categories spanning across film, television, and craft, the stage is set for a celebration of artistic prowess and creativity at the upcoming ceremony, slated to be held at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre on April 20th.

As the countdown begins to the much-anticipated event, the industry eagerly awaits to see which talents will emerge victorious and etch their names in the annals of Irish cinematic history.

In a year marked by exceptional storytelling and remarkable performances, the IFTA Awards promise to be a testament to the enduring spirit of Irish filmmaking.
