Ireland Mourns a Friend: Charlie Bird, the Man Who Gave Voice to the Voiceless, Passes Away
The passing of renowned RTÉ journalist, Charlie Bird, at the age of 74 has left a void in the hearts of many. However, amidst the sorrow, plans to honour his legacy and bid him a peaceful farewell have been disclosed.

According to the death notice shared on RIP.ie, Charlie passed away peacefully yesterday, surrounded by his loving family at Wicklow Hospice. His funeral arrangements include a special service scheduled for Thursday at noon in the Round Room, Mansion House, Dublin 2.
Charlie impacted everyone he came into contact with and left behind wonderful memories. Survived by his beloved wife Claire, daughters Orla and Neasa, and his faithful companion Tiger, he will be deeply missed by his extended family, former colleagues, and a wide circle of friends both near and far.
Instead of flowers, the family has requested donations, if desired, to Wicklow Hospice, a testament to Charlie’s enduring spirit of generosity and compassion even in his final days.
Born in Sandymount, Dublin in 1949, Charlie’s career spanned decades, marked by his unwavering commitment to journalism and advocacy. From covering the tragic Stardust fire in 1981 to reporting on global events like the Haiti earthquake and the September 11 attacks, Charlie’s dedication to storytelling knew no bounds.
His tenure as RTÉ’s Washington correspondent during Barack Obama’s presidency and his lifelong campaign for justice for the Stardust victims are just a few highlights of his illustrious career.
Despite facing his own health battles, notably with motor neurone disease (MND), Charlie remained a beacon of hope and resilience. His openness about his illness and his tireless efforts to support others facing similar challenges earned him admiration and respect from people worldwide.
