Ireland's jet fuel consumption in 2023

Ireland’s jet fuel consumption reached an all-time high in 2023, according to a recent report from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). The nation consumed 1.36 billion litres of jet kerosene to fuel planes across the country—a 12.7% increase from 2022 and the highest annual energy demand for air travel ever recorded.

Ireland’s jet fuel consumption poses challenge to meeting it’s climate tagets

This record-breaking jump in jet fuel use comes as the country grapples with the challenge of meeting its climate targets. Despite the overall 7.3% decrease in energy emissions, sectors such as aviation, transport, and data centres are proving problematic for Ireland’s climate goals.

The 2023 Interim National Energy Balance from SEAI sheds light on Ireland’s energy usage and sources. While renewable energy sources and imported electricity through international interconnectors led to a 20.9% reduction in electricity emissions, aviation and transport remain challenging areas.

SEAI’s Director of Research and Policy Insights, Margie McCarthy, emphasised the need for collective action to address rising transport emissions. With an increase in fossil-fueled cars and flights, McCarthy urges individuals to reconsider unnecessary travel. Moving away from reliance on personal vehicles and air travel can lead to better air quality and sustainable industries.

To meet Ireland’s 2025 climate goals, significant reductions in energy emissions are required, particularly in the aviation and transport sectors.
