James Byrne’s criminal history
James Byrne, who was famously known as ‘Jaws’, had made his way through the Kinahan cartel during his early days. He was a hardened criminal who had links with Martin “The General” Cahill along with working as an armed robber.
From the start of his early years, he remained an active member and earned a reputation as a ‘notorious criminal’ in the gang scene across the country. A source said it was the time before his sons came into the gang and became more active, following his legacy within the Kinahan cartel.
The ‘Jaws’ Dad was well-known for his involvement in fraud and counterfeiting cases, which the Criminal Assets Bureau (Cab) and Revenue considered to be of utmost importance. The deals were reported as agreements to pay out hundreds of thousands of euros as a result of their settlements.
He did not pay his taxes which is a legal way for being a citizen of any country. He paid the Revenue Commissioner €208,400 after Revenue and Cab issued tax charges of approximately €378,612 in the year 2004.
Some of his last dealings with the court include ‘Jaws’ asking the court to return his Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch that cost €35,000 which he was able to seize during a raid. He applied to the High Court seeking the watch which was demanded later by Cab in 2017.
Sadie Byrne, the widow, is deeply saddened by her husband’s demise and she is attending to a large number of people right now who have come to pay their respects. Their home in Raleigh Square was flooded with people for condolences.
Sadie Byrne, a 75-year-old widow, would visit her son Liam in London’s high-security prison, the Belmarsh Prison, where he is staying in remand for weeks.
The entire family of gangsters is charged with one crime or another. Liam Byrne’s brother-in-law, Thomas ‘Bomber’ Kavanagh was charged with conspiring to gain possession of firearms illegally. In addition, he was uncovered as a conspirator in the possession of ammunition and a weapon that were forbidden.
Authorities in the UK have also accused them of plotting to obstruct the administration of justice.
Sadie and James Byrne paid floral tributes to his son, David, another member of the Kinahan cartel, who died in 2016 at a north Dublin hotel. The Hutch gang killed him in a brazen gun attack and the news found its place in international headlines later.
Due to his poor health in the past few months, ‘Jaws’ was not able to attend his nephew’s funeral, Liam Roe, last month. However, Sadie attended.
James Bryne’s son, Liam will not be given leave from the prison to attend his father’s funeral as he is stated to be a major security risk in the UK prison system.
It is scheduled for Friday, September 13, 2024, at 12 pm to have the funeral mass. St. Catherine’s Church on Meath Street is the location.
The death notice mentioned the names of family members who paid tributes to their head. They all specified that they would remember him forever and would be loved deeply.
“May Jemmy rest in peace”, the note said.
