Mary McDonald, Sinn Féin Leader Plans to Meet with Fianna Fáil Leadership

Mary McDonald, the Sinn Féin leader, has said her plans to meet other party leaders this week including her much-desired meeting with Micheál Martin of Fianna Fáil. In an interview with a local news channel, particularly Limerick’s, Ms. McDonald underscored her conversation because Sinn Féin aims to be the key player in the established and future political context. 

Although she had gone on a crusade for a government of change without Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael representation she gave an account of the possibility of a shared government of the two detested parties. As stated by Ms. Mary McDonald, such a scenario was the biggest threat to the progress Sinn Féin had in mind for the country.

She pointed out that Fianna Fáil now has a simple choice of whether it wants a return to a coalition with Fine Gael which would reduce the revolutionary aspect of a Sinn Féin government. “Sinn Féin in government would mean a better outcome for lots of issues – housing, investment in communities, getting immigration right,” she stated, adding that the last government’s approach was “terribly, terribly wrong, in a way that was divisive.”

The election result, which saw Sinn Féin emerge as a dominant force, was a clear signal that Mary McDonald and her party’s success in 2020 was “not a flash in a pan”. “It confirms Sinn Féin as a significant political force south of the border,” Ms. McDonald declared. It also allowed her to place Sinn Féin as the latest party capable of determining the evolution of the Irish political landscape.

However, Fianna Fáil TD Jim O’Callaghan proposed a different approach, saying that it will be better to have a coalition with Fine Gael and a solid number of Independents. He pointed out that the recent election result of Fianna Fáil should be translated to a new government balance in which his party can have a longer term of holding the Taoiseach if a rotational system is to be implemented.

The Bigger Picture of Politics and Its Connection to Sinn Féin

Although there may be controversy within Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin is very clear on its objectives. Labour and the SDs have also been in discussion about the scenario they hope to see at Leinster House after the election, and how they would create a centre-left formation that can negotiate with the major parties during formation of governments. 

But, speaking at the weekend Social Democrats deputy leader Cian O’Callaghan signalled that they would not, with the party planning to visit Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael next week. This means that the formation of coalitions will be a piecemeal exercise with Sinn Féin as the main driving force.

The Dáil is scheduled to sit on 18 December but the political talks may not have concluded on the formation of a new coalition government by then. The situation remained somewhat unpredictable as a result of constantly changing political situations, however, Mary McDonald takes into account all the difficulties which may arise.
