McDonald Pressed to Clarify Dáil Remarks on O Donnghaile

Dáil Remarks on O Donnghaile

Miss Mary Lou McDonald is now again being pressured to clarify her last week’s Dáil remarks on O Donnghaile. Niall O’Donnghaile, the former Irish Sinn Fein politician, was accused of sending inappropriate messages to a teenage boy and Miss McDonald is under the spotlight where she is constantly been saving her party.

Last week, Miss McDonald said that she was sorry for the young person who had to go through mental distress and “endure inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour” by Mr O’Donnghaile. Her statement came soon after the party contacted PSNI and social services for a deeper probe.

Also, in the same week, Miss McDonald addressed the matter by saying that no illegality was found and no criminal charges were in progress relevant to the matter of the teenager.

Taoiseach Simon Harris’ views on Dáil remarks on O Donnghaile

This time, clarifications on Dáil remarks on O Donnghaile have been demanded by Taoiseach Simon Harris. He wants to know about Miss McDonald’s next steps about the matter as Tánaiste Micheál Martin emphasised that the issue needs a quick closure.

Simon Harris wants to know Miss McDonald’s intention on how she would like to proceed with the matter of the teenager who received texts from O’Donnghaile and whether he is ready to issue an apology to the young victim.

After a media satire, Miss McDonald has been making efforts to demand an apology upon the teenager’s request. However, not much of an emphasis is observed.

The Taoiseach said,

“Because I thought from listening to her in the past, from listening to all of us in the past. I thought we now adopt a victim-centred approach to these issues”.

Mr Harris also suggested that she should directly apologise to the victim for misstated facts about his age and that severe proceedings should be made with the involvement of the child protection committee, gardai and PSNI.

Age remains a highlighted factor for the application of child protection laws. On September 13, the party took a stance that the matter was put into the limelight under the child protection guidelines, being an under-18 kid. And it was not a political party’s matter to look into when the rightly concerned departments were referred, including PSNI and Social Services in North.

The teenager’s take on the issue

The teenager revealed to the media yesterday that he was only 16 years old, and not 17, as was stated by Sinn Fein. He was expecting an apology from Miss McDonald due to her way of acknowledging Mr O’Donnghaile while he left the Oireachtas.

Fine Gael minister, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill asked Miss McDonald to set her records straight and be clear about the age of the teenage boy so that the explanation about Dáil remarks on O Donnghaile could be refined.

She added that for over a year Sinn Fein and their leader, Miss McDonald attempted to hide the reason for O’Donnghaile’s reason for resignation, only by saying that he was sacked for “unacceptable behaviours” within the party.

Based on Miss McDonald’s last week’s statement, Miss Carroll repeatedly asked why the matter was not reported to Gardai. However, on the other hand, Sinn Fein TD Louise O’Reilly assured that the matter was referred to PSNI.

When Miss O’Reilly was asked whether Miss McDonald should have ensured beforehand about the age of the teenager, she responded that this was the age that was communicated to them and that is exactly what Miss McDonald mentioned in her Tuesday speech. According to O’Reilly, the information was accurate.

Why is Tánaiste Micheál Martin concerned?

Tánaiste Micheál Martin asked for more clarification about the resignation of Mr O’Donnghaile and Oireachtas was not informed about the reasons.

He stated,

“More clarification is needed in respect of that entire saga, not just in terms of the Brian Stanley affair but also in terms of Niall Ó Donnghaile and to what degree was the Oireachtas blindsided and to what degree was there a cover-up in preventing the Oireachtas from knowing fully as to the reasons as to why he resigned”.

He stressed that the clarifications should be in view during the coming days, or at least by the end of the week.

Sinn Fein’s Vice President steps in

The vice president and First Minister of Sinn Fein, Michelle O’Neill insisted that all child protection matters are of great concern to the party and that assistance of the social services party would definitely be taken for the protection of the young victim.

She was happy that now the record of the victim was set straight, the primary concern of his protection would be prioritised more than ever.

She elucidated that O’Donnghaile has already faced serious consequences for his actions and was “held accountable”.

She was asked whether she would be present at the meeting of the Executive Office Committee this week and she concurred that she needed to put in all her efforts and support as the committee is seeking legal advice.

She proclaimed that everyone needs to put in their “due diligence” and that she would be more than happy to do so. She even mentioned that now is the time that she urges all the political parties to come forward and make it happen.

They all need to be part of the proceedings so that the young victim gets his fair judgment as soon as possible. If it is about safeguarding the rights of children, then everyone needs to be on board for the issue at hand, she declared.

Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman and his viewpoints

The Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman mentioned that he agreed with Taoiseach’s views that Miss McDonald should expedite how this matter should be taken forward. He was of the view that she should have been more careful about her statements regarding Mr O’Donnghaile’s resignation.

Mr O’Gorman remarked that the way she had been praising O’Donnghaile while he was resigning was “flawed”. Being in a position that demanded high levels of intellect, her judgement was naive, according to Mr O’Gorman.

He further added that there might be an opportunity for Deputy MacDonald to make clarifications for “the record of the House”.
