Meta is Poised to advocate for the implementation of age verification across Europe
Meta is set to advocate for the implementation of age verification across Europe during a hearing at the Oireachtas committee today. The company will propose that parents should only need to verify their child’s age once, suggesting that this could be achieved through a verification process at the operating system or app store level.

Meta’s Push for Age Verification Across Europe
Head of Meta’s public policy Dualta Ó Broin will stress the need for a workable solution that takes into account the worries of all parties involved, particularly parents. Meta’s call comes in the context of discussions on the protection of children in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), where the company highlights the challenges of removing bullying and harassment content due to its contextual nature.
Meanwhile, TikTok, also appearing before the committee, asserts that AI, along with human oversight, is employed to identify and mitigate threats. One of TikTok’s main priorities is categorising artificial intelligence (AI)-generated material that has realistic-looking photos, music, or video.
Committee chair Kathleen Funchion expressed the politicians’ interest in understanding how platforms are ensuring the safety of children and how these measures can be further strengthened. As the hearing unfolds, the dialogue will shed light on the evolving strategies to safeguard young users in the digital realm.
