Minister Simon Coveney to Step Down from Cabinet, Cites Party Renewal 

Simon Coveney, Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, has said that he will resign from Cabinet effective next Monday when the Dáil reconvenes. The announcement came via a post on the social media platform X, where Minister Simon Coveney expressed his intention to continue serving as a proud TD for Cork South Central and to actively support the Government in the Dáil.

Minister Simon Coveney’s Decision Seen as Catalyst for Fine Gael Renewal Efforts

Mr. Coveney disclosed that he informed Simon Harris, the head of Fine Gael, of his decision through a conversation. During an appearance on RTÉ’s Today with Claire Byrne, he explained that while he wasn’t certain if he would have been asked to serve in Mr. Harris’ Cabinet, stepping down would facilitate the transition for the new party leader. 

He emphasised that his resignation aims to aid in party renewal and to pave the way for new ideas within Fine Gael. Mr. Coveney’s decision reflects a commitment to the party’s evolution and underscores his dedication to continuing his service as a member of the Dáil.
