The motive behind the Galway barrack attack is being investigated currently, said Gardai. A teenage boy was arrested after an army chaplain, in his 50s, was stabbed several times and got seriously injured.

Last night, an army chaplain was injured with a knife in a teenager’s hands at Renmore Barracks. The incident took place at 10:45 pm.

A special detective team is assigned the task of investigating the motive behind the Galway barrack attack, Gardai said. The line of enquiry would probe deeper to check whether the attack had any connection with terrorist intent.

The man was immediately admitted to University Hospital Galway where the doctors claimed that his injuries were serious but not fatal.

The man thanked the nation and the authorities who took a stand for him and condemned the violent attack. He mentioned in his post on Facebook, in the early morning that he was awaiting surgery and thanked for the prayers.

Before Gardai reached the crime scene, the teenage boy was restrained by the Defence Forces at Galway barracks. At present, he is detained at a Garda police station in the North Western Region for deeper investigation.

Any evident motive?

Gardai believes that the incident does not contain any motive for a wider conspiracy. Assistant Commissioner, Cliona Richardson along with Chief Superintendent Gerard Roche arrived at the crime scene to look into the matter.

Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris spoke to the Defence Forces and prayed for a speedy recovery of the army chaplain. He was entirely against such acts and did not allow such violence in the country at any cost.

The Defence Forces team admitted that a few warning gunshots were fired at the scene “in strict accordance with force protection protocols after a Defence Forces member was assaulted by a male civilian”.

In addition, Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Sean Clancy stated, “The well-being of our personnel is our utmost priority, and we will continue to support him during this time”.

He was proud of the swift action that his team took with intelligence that was “exemplary”. The actions matched the highest standards of values and morals that the team’s mission is based on, he explained.

He knew it was because of their professionalism and the ability to handle a difficult situation that saved the life of an army chaplain and helped in restraining the suspect on the spot. The people living in the vicinity are now more confident as their life protection is in good hands, he cited.

The prompt prevention of harm or loss of life was the tactful action for which An Garda Siochana should be thanked, Gen Clancy said.

For an instant closure and conclusion of the case, cooperation from all the concerned authorities is required, Clancy said. Motive still needs to be sorted out and full cooperation along with ongoing assistance remain the chief elements of the investigation, the General remarked.

Further investigations at the scene are still underway. The site is closed for technical examination.
