Simon Harris, New Fine Gael Leader, Pledges Stability Until 2025 

In his inaugural address as the new leader of Fine Gael, Simon Harris has asserted his commitment to ensuring the current coalition government serves its full term, aiming for an election in 2025.

Speaking in Athlone, Harris underlined the value of continuity by saying, “It is my intention that this Government be in office for the entire term.” He stressed the need for governmental stability, acknowledging the inherent unpredictability of Irish politics.

The new Fine Gael leader has already engaged in discussions with coalition partners and plans further meetings in the coming days, including a discussion with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar regarding transition plans. 

Addressing pressing issues, Harris highlighted the necessity of a comprehensive migration policy, advocating for faster asylum decisions to provide clarity for applicants. 

Harris outlined his vision for Fine Gael, calling for a return to core values such as enterprise, equality of opportunity, integrity, and security. He emphasised the importance of an economy that benefits all, particularly the youth, ensuring a promising future within Ireland.

Additionally, Harris reiterated Fine Gael’s stance on international affairs, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. 

Looking forward, Harris pledged to reconnect the party with its grassroots and confront populism with civility and determination. He vowed to bring energy and renewal to Fine Gael, fostering open and respectful debate. 

While Cabinet appointments are pending until the return of the Dáil on April 9th, Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys is confirmed as Fine Gael’s deputy leader. 

In related news, Minister Simon Coveney confirmed his candidacy in the upcoming general election, expressing support for the leadership transition. Speculation surrounds potential Cabinet changes, with Minister of State Peter Burke considered a likely contender for promotion.
