World Wildlife Day Celebration 

March 3 marks World Wildlife Day, an annual celebration dedicated to honouring the diverse array of wild animals and plants that enrich our planet. This year’s theme, Linking People and Planet: Investigating Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation, highlights how important it is to employ technology to preserve our natural heritage. 

To commemorate this occasion, Tourism NI has curated the ultimate guide to experiencing Northern Ireland’s wild side, offering a range of immersive encounters that promise to forge a deeper connection between people and the environment. 

Exploring Northern Ireland’s Natural Gems 

1. Belfast Window on Wildlife (WOW), County Antrim: 

Nestled within the Belfast Harbour Estate, WOW offers panoramic vistas of Belfast Lough, providing a sanctuary for a myriad of bird species. Visitors can marvel at Lapwings, Terns, and even Konik Ponies, while two specially constructed hides offer intimate views of the reserve’s inhabitants. 

2. Exploris Aquarium & Seal Sanctuary, County Down: 

Experience the depths of marine life at Exploris, Northern Ireland’s premier aquarium. The new ‘Under the Sea’ experience invites guests to travel through an underwater glass tunnel, encountering a kaleidoscope of oceanic wonders. 3. County Down’s Castle Espie 

The Wetland Center is home to a variety of wetland animals. It is situated on the beaches of Strangford Lough. 4. Rathlin West Light Seabird Centre, County Antrim:

Rathlin, home to hundreds of seabirds, including the recognisable Puffin, provides an enthralling look into island life. The reopening of Rathlin West Light Seabird Centre on Easter Sunday heralds the return of these beloved avian residents, inviting visitors to witness nature’s spectacle firsthand. 

5. Mount Stewart, County Down: 

You can take a botanical journey at Mount Stewart, hailed as one of the world’s top gardens. Crafted by the visionary Lady Londonderry, the estate boasts meticulously landscaped gardens and scenic trails. From the Shamrock Garden to the Sunk Garden, Mount Stewart is a testament to the enduring beauty of nature’s creations. 

6. Murlough National Nature Reserve, County Down: 

The ancient sands of Murlough National Nature Reserve, provide a wealth of biodiversity. Home to rare bird species and wintering wildfowl, this 6,000-year-old dune system offers a glimpse into Northern Ireland’s ecological richness.
