Israel Reprimands Irish Ambassador Over Palestine Statehood Recognition
Ireland’s ambassador to Israel, Sonya McGuinness, has faced reprimand from Israel’s foreign ministry following Ireland’s decision to recognize Palestine as a state. Israel phoned the embassies of Norway, Spain, and Ireland and recalled its ambassador to Ireland in a major diplomatic action. These nations had jointly acknowledged Palestinian statehood on Wednesday.

Irish Ambassador Shown Hostage Footage After Palestine Statehood Recognition
A brief movie was played to the ambassadors during their meeting with Yaakov Blitshtein, director general of the Foreign Ministry. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum published this footage, which showed the exact moment that five of the 132 hostages were snatched by Hamas fighters in October of last year.
A spokesperson for Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed McGuinness’s attendance at the meeting but noted that no specific retaliatory measures by Israel were discussed. The encounter, which was characterised by a “forthright exchange of views,” happened after a film from the Israeli Foreign Ministry was made public. In it, Irish traditional music was blended controversially with Hamas fighter footage.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz criticised Palestine statehood recognition by Ireland, accusing it of rewarding terrorism. In response, Taoiseach Simon Harris, speaking on a programme, defended Ireland’s stance, emphasising the importance of addressing the core issues in Gaza and calling for Israel to heed international calls for peace.
Despite the diplomatic friction, Ireland remains steadfast in its support for Palestinian statehood, anticipating that more European nations will join their stance. Meanwhile, violence continues in Gaza, with Israeli forces conducting deadly operations against Hamas militants.
