The Number of Jordanian Asylum Seekers in Ireland Spike by 1800% Over a Year
In a dramatic shift in migration patterns, the number of Jordanian asylum seekers in Ireland has surged by over 1,800% in the past year, according to statistics from the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS). Last July, only 53 Jordanian asylum seekers were recorded. By this week, that number has skyrocketed to 1,021.

The latest figures reveal that Jordan leads in asylum applications for the week ending July 14, with 134 new arrivals. This is a stark contrast to the second-highest country, Palestine, which saw 24 new seekers. Even last week, Jordan maintained its top spot with 86 arrivals, while Palestine had 26.
Jordanian Asylum Seekers Reach Top Ten Origins in Ireland Amid System Reforms
This influx has catapulted Jordan into the top ten countries of origin for asylum seekers in Ireland, up from 40th place last year. Despite a slight overall decrease in asylum numbers this week—from 31,337 to 31,220—Nigeria remains the leading country of origin with 6,295 seekers.
The Department of Justice attributes the increase to shifting migration patterns and has responded by ramping up investment in the international protection system. This includes doubling the staff at the International Protection Office and introducing accelerated processing to address the growing demand. The median wait time for a first interview is currently 55.5 weeks, indicating that many new applicants may not receive their substantive interview until next year.
