Green Party Leadership Election Marks Milestone in Party Stability
This marks a significant milestone for the Green Party, with O’Gorman becoming its fourth leader in history. Expressing deep humility and gratitude for the support received, he acknowledged the pivotal roles played by Eamon Ryan and outgoing deputy leader Catherine Martin in steering the party’s resurgence from its lowest point in 2011.
The election, conducted online over several days, saw active participation with 1,896 ballots cast out of 3,425 eligible members. Despite the close outcome, O’Gorman emphasised party unity and stability, confirming that there are no immediate plans for a ministerial reshuffle. Both Eamon Ryan and Catherine Martin will continue in their current Cabinet roles under O’Gorman’s leadership.
Looking forward, O’Gorman pledged to address misinformation surrounding critical issues such as climate change, biodiversity, and asylum seekers. He aims to broaden the party’s appeal while staying true to its core environmental principles, with a focus on promoting social justice and equality.
Roderic O’Gorman, who previously served as a county councillor and now represents Dublin West as a TD since 2020, brings a wealth of experience and a forward-looking vision to his new role as leader of the Green Party.
