Now in its sixth day, the surprise onslaught has taken the Kremlin by surprise. Ukrainian troops, numbering in the thousands according to a Ukrainian security official, have seized the initiative after months of sluggish Russian progress in the east. Russian officials reported that Ukraine’s claims of deploying 1,000 troops were grossly underestimated, with actual numbers far exceeding that figure. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the operation, highlighting its strategic intent to push the conflict into Russian territory.
