A horrific tragedy that happened as a result of a stage collapse in Mexico in state of Nuevo León during an election campaign rally, has left at least nine people—including a child—dead and fifty more injured. The calamity occurred in San Pedro Garza Garcia, near Monterrey, as centre-left presidential candidate Jorge Alvarez Maynez was delivering a speech.

Stage collapse in Mexico – Maynez comforts supporters

Mr. Maynez, who was uninjured in the collapse, was seen consoling supporters afterward. He confirmed that several members of his team sustained injuries. The incident was attributed to a sudden gust of wind, which caused the lighting structure to topple.

Footage circulating on social media shows the moment the structure gave way, with Mr. Maynez waving to supporters and then fleeing as the stage collapsed. The immediate response from local authorities included a warning from State Governor Samuel Garcia, urging residents to stay indoors due to the severe weather conditions. 

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, offered his sympathies and said he was giving the victims’ friends, family, and supporters a hug.

Mr. Maynez, representing the Citizens’ Movement party, is currently trailing in third place in the national polls. The tragic incident has cast a shadow over the campaign, highlighting the unpredictable dangers posed by extreme weather events.
