Status Orange Alert: Damaged Trees And Power Cuts Across Affected Areas

A Status Orange Alert has led to significant disruptions across Munster and Leinster, with reports of power outages and fallen trees as heavy rain and strong winds batter the region.

The Status Orange Alert, issued by Met Éireann, affects five counties and warns of hazardous conditions, including flooding and travel disruptions. As the alert continues, thousands of residents are left dealing with power outages and damage caused by the severe weather.

In Co Cork, several reports have emerged of trees being uprooted by the high winds. Areas such as Rathcormac, Youghal, and Monkstown have been particularly affected.

The R639 near Rathcormac saw significant obstructions due to fallen trees, while in Youghal, road conditions have become perilous. Emergency crews have been dispatched to deal with the debris, but the situation remains hazardous for local residents.

The Status Orange Alert for rain and the accompanying Status Yellow wind warnings have resulted in over 3,000 customers experiencing power outages. According to ESB Networks, the disruption is in line with previous similar weather warnings.

The utility company assured the public that crews are working diligently to restore power where possible. ESB Networks has emphasised that their teams are mobilised and prioritising safety while responding to the outages across the affected areas.

Met Éireann has also issued warnings about dangerous driving conditions, especially in counties like Cork and Waterford, where intense rain has led to water accumulation on roads.

A Status Orange Alert for rain remains in effect for both counties until 6 p.m. this evening, with the potential for thundery downpours adding to the hazardous conditions.

Additionally, Co Waterford saw a maritime mishap when a boat broke free from its moorings near Dunmore East. The vessel ran aground and was subsequently broken up on the rocks.

This incident highlights the broader impact of the severe weather, affecting not only land but also maritime operations. Authorities have advised people to avoid coastal areas during the Status Orange Alert as strong winds and high tides could result in dangerous situations.

Further south, counties Carlow, Kilkenny, and Wexford are also under a Status Orange Alert for rain, which took effect at 1 p.m. and will remain in place until midnight.

Met Éireann has warned of potential flooding in these areas due to heavy rain and has advised residents to remain vigilant. The forecaster has highlighted the risk of intense, thundery downpours, which could lead to localised flooding, creating dangerous conditions for both pedestrians and motorists.

The Road Safety Authority has echoed these warnings, urging road users to exercise caution while travelling, especially in areas under the Status Orange Alert

Drivers are being advised to check local traffic updates and weather conditions before embarking on any journeys. With fallen trees and power outages adding to the chaos, the situation remains volatile across Munster and Leinster.

Aside from the counties affected by the Status Orange Alert, a separate Status Yellow rain warning has also been issued for Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford, which is set to remain in effect until 8 p.m. today.

The dual warnings emphasise the severity of the weather event, with widespread rain and wind creating challenging conditions for emergency services and residents alike.

In another part of the country, counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, and Wicklow are also under a Status Yellow rain warning, which took effect at noon and will remain in place until midnight.

The continuous rain and potential for thunderstorms have prompted widespread travel disruptions, with authorities advising against unnecessary travel during this period.

Status Orange Alert: Emergency Organisations Are Making Every Effort Count

As the Status Orange Alert remains active, the possibility of further damage and disruptions looms. Emergency crews, including Co. Louth Police are working to manage the situation, but the combination of strong winds, torrential rain, and fallen trees continues to pose a challenge.

With power outages affecting thousands of homes and businesses, it is clear that the impact of the Status Orange Alert will be felt long after the weather subsides.

Residents in affected areas are advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep updated on the latest weather forecasts.

The Status Orange Alert will remain in effect until further notice, with more rain and potential storms expected. For now, the focus remains on ensuring safety and minimising the damage caused by this severe weather system.
