Suspected Poisoning in Park Sparks Concern among Dog Owners
A Dublin-based veterinary practice has issued a warning to pet owners following a series of concerning incidents involving suspected poisoning in a local park. Several pets were admitted to the clinic on Monday afternoon exhibiting signs of intoxication, believed to be linked to their recent visit to Johnstown Park, located between Finglas and Glasnevin.

Symptoms of Suspected Poisoning in Dogs
According to reports, the affected animals displayed symptoms including agitation, disorientation, and difficulty walking. All of them had visited the park on the same morning before showing signs of illness.
Michael John Winters, a veterinarian at Fox Veterinary, advised local pet owners to walk their animals on leashes at all times and to use caution when visiting parks.
He advised against letting pets roam freely and emphasised the importance of staying vigilant, particularly in areas with dense vegetation or unkempt surroundings where potential hazards may be harder to spot. Dr. Winters, speaking with Joe Duffy, highlighted the challenges in identifying the exact cause of the intoxication. While some pets have responded well to treatment and supportive care, the source of the toxicity remains unclear.
He cautioned that intoxication in pets can occur due to various factors, including ingestion of moulds, fungi, cigarette butts, or even alcoholic beverages.
One pet owner, Niall Connolly, shared his experience after his labradoodle, Enzo, fell ill following a visit to the park. Enzo required medical treatment, including intravenous fluids, to recover from the episode. Fortunately, Enzo is now doing well, but the incident left Niall shaken and underscored the importance of being cautious when allowing pets outdoors.
The occurrences serve as a warning to pet owners to keep an eye out for potential threats and to take precautions to keep their dogs safe. As investigations into the cause of the poisoning continue, authorities urge pet owners to report any suspicious activity or substances found in local parks to prevent further incidents.
The public is urged to keep themselves informed about these occurrences and to put their pets’ safety and wellbeing first. To ensure the health and happiness of cherished pets, one must practise vigilante and responsible pet ownership.
