Founded by Jack Cohen, a man with humble beginnings, Tesco’s journey dates back to 1919 when Cohen, the son of Polish Jewish immigrants, established his first market stall in London. Utilising funds earned from his service in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I, Cohen ventured into the world of retail, initially selling goods from a modest street stand.
What’s the meaning behind Tesco?
It was in 1923 that the iconic name “Tesco” was born. Cohen, having purchased a consignment of tea from a supplier named Thomas Edward Stockwell, ingeniously combined the first two letters of his own surname with the initials of his supplier, thus giving rise to the now-famous appellation.
From its humble beginnings, Tesco steadily expanded, with Cohen opening the first physical store in Edgware, North London, in 1929. The brand reached over 100 stores by 1939, which was a major turning point in its growth. Fast forward to 1958, Tesco made another leap forward by opening its inaugural supermarket in Essex, signalling the dawn of a new era in retail.
Today, Tesco stands tall as one of Ireland’s most beloved supermarkets, having served communities across the nation for over 25 years.
