The strike, which took place over the weekend, resulted in 45 deaths after a blaze ripped through a camp for displaced individuals. Despite the significant loss of life, the US does not consider Israel’s actions a breach of Biden’s “red lines” for a full-scale military operation, according to National Security Council spokesman John Kirby.

US Awaits Investigation into Rafah Strike

Kirby acknowledged the gravity of the incident, assuring that the US is not indifferent to the humanitarian crisis. He noted that Israel’s investigation into the strike is ongoing, and the US is awaiting its findings. Biden has previously expressed opposition to a major military offensive in Rafah, leading to a temporary halt in heavy bomb shipments to Israel earlier this month. The US stance remains firm despite recent escalations and Israeli tanks being spotted in central Rafah amid ongoing clashes.

The Pentagon described the assault as “limited in scope,” with Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh highlighting the administration’s cautious approach until the Israeli military completes its investigation.

Israel has labeled the strike a “tragic accident,” stating their smallest bomb was used, and attributing the subsequent blaze to factors beyond their munitions. Meanwhile, calls from Republicans for sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) were dismissed by the White House, maintaining that such measures are inappropriate. As the situation develops, the US continues to navigate its complex alliance with Israel while addressing the humanitarian implications of the conflict in Gaza.
