UUP Leader Doug Beattie Resigns Amid ‘Irreconcilable Differences’
UUP leader Doug Beattie has resigned, citing “irreconcilable differences” with party officials. His departure comes amid much conjecture about his future brought on by internal conflicts with key party officials.

Elected as UUP (Ulster Unionist Party) leader in 2021, Beattie, a British Army veteran and recipient of the Military Cross, was known for his liberal stance within unionism and his commitment to a progressive agenda.
Beattie expressed that it had been a “huge honour” to lead the party, but acknowledged the challenges and personal toll that came with the role. He mentioned that some within the party doubted his ability to maintain the momentum needed to move the UUP forward, leading to his decision to step down.
