In a landmark ruling, former US President Donald Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts in a criminal hush-money trial. This verdict, delivered by a New York City jury on May 30, 2024, marks a historic moment as Trump becomes the first US president to be charged and convicted of a crime. The trial’s outcome could significantly impact the upcoming November elections, where Trump is set to face Democratic incumbent Joe Biden.

Trump Found Guilty in Hush-Money Trial for Concealing Payments during 2016 Campaign

The jury convicted Trump guilty of falsifying business documents pertaining to a hush-money payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign after a seven-week trial. According to the prosecution, Trump attempted to conceal the funds to increase his chances of winning.

Following the verdict, Trump, maintaining his innocence, criticised the trial as “rigged” and vowed to appeal. “This is far from over,” he said outside the Criminal Court of Manhattan. 

Although Trump could spend up to four years in prison for each felony count, legal experts say that a prison term is unlikely. Instead, probation or community service might be more probable outcomes. July 11 is his scheduled sentencing date, which is a few days prior to the Republican National Convention.

The conviction has polarised reactions, with Trump’s supporters and critics offering starkly different perspectives on its political implications.
