Travelling from Letterkenny (the largest town in Donegal), it takes approximately 30 minutes by car to reach the shore. The site provides public restrooms together with clearly designated pathways which lead to the beach. It takes only a few minutes to reach Portsalon Pier which offers local dining establishments and a pub that serves drinks for customers who have just finished swimming. 

The Portsalon Golf Club offers dining options with ocean views for a formal meal. The main parking area contains a small shop and a chip van that serves customers during the season. 

How to get to Portsalon Beach

Typical access to Portsalon Beach is through Letterkenny, heading towards Ramelton and Rathmullan. The R268 (Knockalla Drive) functions as a beautiful yet narrow coastal road which leads to the beach. Visitors from northern peninsula regions should take the coastal road starting at Fanad Head. 

The roads feature narrow sections with winding paths which require cautious driving. Drivers should familiarise themselves with Irish road signs before navigating remote roads. The region lacks public transport, which makes driving or taking a tour the best travel option.

The Fanad Peninsula is a great place to visit, with Portsalon as a central location just 20 minutes from other popular attractions.

Fanad Head Lighthouse

Just north of this beach is the iconic Fanad Head Lighthouse, one of Ireland’s most photographed landmarks. The site offers guided tours on the Wild Atlantic Way. 

Great Arch at Portsalon Beach

The Great Arch stands as an expansive natural arch created by the ocean near Knockalla Beach. The geological features make this location a valuable experience which requires only a short time to explore.

Knockalla Drive

This is the beach front road. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful drives in Ireland, with a number of “pull-over” stops to view the entire Ballymastocker Strand.

Rathmullan Village

A 15-minute drive away is this historic seaside village. It is famous for its pier, the Flight of the Earls and delicious seafood.

Glenveagh National Park

If you want to escape the coast, Glenveagh National Park is a 45-minute drive away. There is a beautiful castle, gardens and a number of trails in the Derryveagh Mountains.

• If planning to visit in the summer, arrive early to get parking. 
• Take note of the tide times. A low tide reveals miles of golden sand and pools that are ideal for small kids.
• Remember that safety comes first. The Atlantic Ocean is cold and if you’re planning on being in the water for extended periods, a wetsuit is a good idea, even in July and August.
