In response to the protests, armoured vehicles and troops have been deployed to patrol the streets of the capital. Footage from Reuters TV shows minimal civilian movement, with only a few motorcycles and three-wheel taxis visible. Police have used sound grenades to disperse smaller protest groups in various parts of the city. Additionally, thousands of protesters have gathered around law enforcement stationed at key locations.
The military spokesperson’s office has claimed that Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman will be speaking to the people and advising them to exercise patience and calmness. The Bangladesh protests, which began last month over a contentious job quota system, have escalated into a broader movement seeking Hasina’s resignation. The unrest has led to significant violence, including at least 91 deaths and numerous injuries, prompting a nationwide curfew and disruptions to rail services and the garment industry.
