The Burren’s underlying geology provides an intriguing window into Earth’s environment over 300 million years ago. According to Dr. Doyle, the oldest rocks found on the surface of the Burren developed around 330 million years ago, during the Carboniferous period, when the region was submerged in warm, shallow tropical waters close to the equator.
