Homes and businesses in Dublin are being urged to conserve water following a surge in demand, hitting record levels this week with almost 630 million litres consumed daily. The national water utility, Uisce Éireann, expects a spike in leaks and burst pipes after weeks of frigid weather.

Public is being asked to conserve water amidst the demand rises

The agency is urging the public to check properties for leaks and promptly report any in public areas to minimise waste. Additional repair crews are being deployed to address the expected surge in leaks. With water treatment plants nearing maximum output capacity, residents are asked to conserve water to alleviate the strain on resources.

In order to emphasise the gravity of the problem, regional operations manager Stephen Burke said, “This week, daily demand in the Greater Dublin Area was the second-highest in living memory at almost 630 million litres per day.” Since last week, the demand has grown by almost 15 million litres per day, and it is already nearly 40 million litres higher than it was during the same time last year.

Burke stressed the value of conserving water, pointing out that it is a valuable resource that must go through an elaborate and expensive treatment procedure before it can be safely consumed. Although there is enough raw water in the reservoirs, the city’s treatment plants are currently operating at or close to capacity due to demand.

Uisce Éireann is urging residents and businesses to identify and fix leaks promptly. Households are also requested to avoid leaving taps running and to repair any dripping taps. It is recommended that businesses exercise caution when using water and look for ways to cut costs.

Burke expressed gratitude for the public’s assistance in reporting leaks and acknowledged the repair crews’ efforts. To guarantee sufficient water supply, the utility is vigorously stepping up its leakage repair program and other network improvements throughout the Dublin region.

To keep the public informed about water supply issues, Uisce Éireann encourages customers to check the Service Updates section of water.ie or follow them on social media. The customer service hotline, 1800 278 278, is open around-the-clock.

As Dublin faces this water crisis, the cooperation of residents and businesses is crucial to maintaining sustainable water levels. Simple actions, such as promptly fixing leaks and being mindful of water use, can contribute to preserving this vital resource during challenging times.
