The success is largely attributed to the NPWS-led Corncrake LIFE conservation project, which collaborates closely with farmers and landowners in core breeding areas such as Galway, Mayo, and Donegal.

EU-Funded Corncrake LIFE Project Drives Highest Corncrake Numbers with Innovative Conservation Measures

The Corncrake LIFE project, funded by the EU, has implemented several key conservation measures since 2021. These include creating large patches of nettle or crops for corncrakes to hide in, delaying grass mowing until mid-August to allow chicks to be raised safely, and using innovative methods like mowing fields from the centre outwards to reduce chick mortality by up to 60%.

Despite these successes, Corncrake LIFE project manager Dr. John Carey emphasised the species remains vulnerable due to environmental changes and shifting weather patterns. The project’s continued success relies on ongoing collaboration and support from the community and farming sector, with targeted grants and incentives playing a crucial role.

As the project enters its final year, efforts to ensure its continuation beyond 2025 are underway, highlighting its importance as a model for community-focused nature conservation.
