Statistics of the Irish Accent Survey

With 35% of respondents placing the capital’s cadence at the top of their list, Dubliners can proudly claim the title of having Ireland’s most-loved accent. But the competition was close! Donegal’s charming brogue followed closely behind with 28% of the votes, while Cork’s distinctive tones secured 21%, no doubt influenced by the likes of Cillian Murphy and Graham Norton.

Further down the ranks, Mayo, Westmeath, and Limerick’s accents received less love, garnering 7%, 6%, and 3% respectively. However, it’s important to remember that beauty lies in the ear of the beholder, and these regional gems undoubtedly hold special charm for many.

It’s interesting that there has been a spike in interest in language learning since the study was released. Duolingo, a popular language-learning app, has seen a 12.3% increase in website traffic and a 17.3% jump in app downloads in recent months. This suggests that people are increasingly curious about exploring new languages and cultures, perhaps even inspired by Ireland’s diverse tapestry of accents.

As an Alt Index spokesperson notes, “Duolingo continues to emerge as one of the world’s leading platforms for language learning, with a staggering growth in mobile app downloads and website traffic.” This trend underlines the growing desire to connect with others through understanding their language and perhaps even appreciating the nuances of different accents.

So, whether you’re drawn to the vibrant energy of the Dublin lilt, the lyrical charm of Donegal, or the unique character of any other Irish accent, remember that each one adds to the rich tapestry of the Emerald Isle. And who knows, this survey will spark your curiosity to explore the beauty and diversity of language within Ireland and beyond!
