Malahide’s New Street Pedestrian Upgrade Approved
In a significant development for the picturesque town of Malahide, Fingal County Council has granted New Street Pedestrian Upgrade approval. The decision comes after a period of deliberation and public discourse, reflecting the community’s mixed sentiments toward the proposal. The ambitious project aims to transform the thoroughfare into a more accessible and inviting space for residents and visitors alike.

Initially met with opposition from some locals, the project gained substantial support, especially from businesses that experienced increased sales during trial periods of pedestrianisation. The COVID-19 pandemic played a role in reshaping perspectives, highlighting the potential for enhanced public spaces that prioritise outdoor activities and community engagement.
The authorised designs call for enhanced outdoor dining spaces, a new landscaping design, and a thorough renovation of the sidewalks and street surfaces. Notably, the project envisions the creation of new public seating areas, a water feature, and designated bike parking. To ensure sustainability, essential Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUDs) features will be incorporated, along with improvements in public lighting.
The proposed transformation aims to position New Street as the “Temple Bar” of the north of the capital, creating a vibrant and pedestrian-friendly atmosphere. The final design details, including finishes and specifics, will undergo approval, followed by a well-defined construction timeline established after a meticulous procurement process.

Local businesses are expected to reap the benefits of New Street pedestrian upgrade, as the upgraded street becomes a focal point for both residents and tourists. The importance of the public realm enhancements for a pedestrianised New Street in preserving Malahide’s sustainable future was underscored by Cllr Adrian Henchy, the mayor of Fingal. Henchy highlighted the collaborative nature of the project, with input from emergency services, residents, businesses, and Disabled Persons Organizations (DPOs), ensuring that the redesigned space welcomes everyone.
According to Mayor Henchy, the design has been revised with feedback from the emergency services, locals, companies, and Disabled Persons Organizations (DPOs). This will ensure that everyone is genuinely welcome in the newly created area, which will connect to the Village Green at the end of the street.
Fingal County Council Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly expressed confidence at the decision to move forward, citing it as a major milestone for the New Street project. In order to complete the transformation plans, the integrated design team will keep working for the upcoming months. The chief executive anticipates moving into the procurement phase, underscoring the commitment to revitalising and enhancing Malahide’s urban landscape.
