Fianna Fáil TD James Lawless brought the issue to Minister Helen McEntee’s attention, highlighting the “severe impact” on residents. Ms. McEntee confirmed two perimeter inspections by the IPS, finding no noise emanating from the prison itself.

Mystery of the ‘Mechanical Wailing’

“They were unable to recognize any such noise coming from the prison,” said the Minister, suggesting the noise might originate “from something external to the prison.” This explanation falls short for many residents, who describe the sound as a constant, unsettling wail.

One social media user, attempting humour in the face of sleepless nights, suggested the noise might be the “auld triangle,” a prison punishment device. However, like Mr. Lawless, most residents still need more answers from the prison authorities.

Minister McEntee pledged further investigation, stating her officials would contact Mr. Lawless for a more precise location of the noise. Residents hope this renewed effort will unravel the Mountjoy mystery and restore their peaceful nights.
