Former Miss Universe Ireland Turned FIFO Worker In Western Australian Mines
Former Miss Universe Ireland, Grainne Gallanagh, spilt the beans on working as a FIFO (fly in fly out) worker in western Australian mines.
She arrived in Australia in March last year with a visa. She relocated to Perth for work purposes. She and her fiancé Ryan Coleman were required to complete 88 days of FIFO work in the rural area during the first year.

The former Miss Universe Ireland, from walking the glamorous ramp walk to being a mine worker, construed on her journey that she would remember for the rest of her lifetime.
Working in the rugged dirt mines on a 12-hour shift by driving trucks in scorching Australian heat is an experience of a lifetime, she confessed. She said she never thought that she would love working in the field which is entirely different from what she had been doing previously.
She narrated, “I was so nervous about starting this job and how I would be received in an environment where I had no idea what I was doing, and it was mostly men.”
She was happily surprised that the mine’s working people and staff welcomed her with warm hearts and have been helpful, kind and patient towards her. She cited in an Instagram post that they make her laugh each day and have created a homely environment for her.
She mentioned that she and her fiancé have decided to continue working in the dirt and heat environment even if they had completed their FIFO requirements as they enjoyed it to the fullest.
Miss Universe Ireland is happy having earned “Employee of the Month”
The former Miss Universe Ireland also revealed that she was named “Employee of the Month” in her first month and accredited it all to her hard work. She comically accepted that she was the only one “building this mine” with a sorry to the rest of the male mine workers. However, she said she would miss it a lot after she moved out of there.
She exclaimed that she could not wait to tell the stories of Australian mines to her future kids as they would be excited to know that she was “driving around giving out ice pops”.
She further explained the pros and cons of working in Australia via FIFO as it is a great way to save some money. She elucidated the reasons that food and travel costs are covered by the company. This is why the couple enjoyed a short holiday when they first arrived in Australia before actually joining the mines.
The Miss Universe winner took off the lid with another surprising detail of FIFO work that she got a full week, seven days in a row, off. It was like a mini vacation for her that gave her ample time to look around the country.
She humorously added ‘flies’ as one of the cons of working in Australia. She listed some disadvantages like long days, temperature above 40°C, hard to make friends and even harder to join clubs or classes.
She also asked her followers to stay tuned on her Instagram for her and fiancé’s upcoming wedding for which she has returned to Ireland. Grainne encouraged her massive count of 87,000 followers to wait for the next episodes of her life.
Miss Universe Ireland pointed out that it is always hard to leave home and family, which remains the prime reason for her return to Ireland. Although she admitted that she enjoyed in Australia and loved every bit of her job, but “it’s not easy to leave your family”, she conceded.
